Windows 7 Release Candidate 1's Best Surprise New Features

Windows XP Mode
To encourage enterprise people to let loose and rock Windows 7, it runs a full-fledged Windows XP virtual environment using Microsoft's Virtual PC. It requires an additional download (booo), but you won't have to worry about your applications breaking like with Vista. Update: Paul Thurrott has more info and a huge walkthrough on XP Mode, including the crushing revelation it's gonna be free for Windows 7 Pro, Enterprise and Ultimate, not Home Premium, which is the version regular people are going to be running.

The Most Insane Default Backgrounds Ever
Look at these. Yes, these are just a handful of the ridiculously awesome backgrounds packed inside Windows 7. Some are the products of acid trips through a nightmare land of anime hell that I would never wish on anybody, and some are simply stunning. Just wow. Click to make bigger, obvs. Update: Okay, the backgrounds were in some of the builds between the Public Beta and the upcoming RC, but they weren't, you know, public.

  • Windows Media Player's Remote Media Sharing will let you access your media library from anywhere over the internet. You need a Windows Live ID that you associate with your Windows 7 user account using a tool you have to download. (This could grow to include other "online identities," like Facebook I'm guessing, but I wouldn't hold your breath for your Gmail account.) You also need the same version of Windows Media Player running on both computers. After everything's all associamated, then your home library you wanna stream from should show up just like a local library under the "Other Libraries" section in the side navigation pane.

    Google : profile search..google the name...thats it...

    Recently Google has introduced a new service to search for the public profile available on the internet. It allows you to control how you appear on Google and tell others a bit more about who you are.

    With Google Profile, you can easily share your web content on the central location including links to your blog, online photos, and other profiles such as Facebook, Orkut, Linkedln and lots more. You have control over what others see.

    For a greater control over what people find when they search for your name, Google begun to show Google profile results at the bottom of U.S. name-query search pages.

    If you don’t have a Google profile page, you can create your Google profile from here. And if you want to search for any available profile click here.

    Via: Google Blog

    Its getting better day by day.personally i believe this thing has its own pros and cons.it would definitely help people know each other better and would make the search easy and also connectivity would be better but its a threat to privacy as well.Who knows when you get a duplicate account of yourz online.so there must be a authority that certifies the pofile.

    Microsoft promises public beta of Office 2010

    http://ivory.vnunet.com/images/microsoft-sign/medium.jpg

    Microsoft has denied rumours that it will not run a public beta programme for its forthcoming Office 2010 suite.

    A company spokesperson said that Microsoft will follow its regular development pattern, and allow the public to get their hands on working beta copies of the office applications package.

    "Although we are not disclosing a date for the public beta, there definitely will be one. This development cycle for Office is no different than in years past, " the spokesperson said.

    "In the third quarter of this year, Office 2010 will enter technical preview, which is an invite-only programme, and this will be followed by a public beta where millions can try out Office."

    Microsoft's statement came shortly after word broke that the upcoming version of Office would not be available as a public beta.

    Office 2010 will be the first major update of the company's productivity suite since Office 2007 was released alongside Windows Vista in January 2007.

    Like its predecessor, development of Office 2010 is taking place as Microsoft readies its next version of Windows. The company is expected to publish the first release candidates for Windows 7 in May, and possibly ship a final version by the fourth quarter of this year.

    Pirate Bay: We're not going to pay our fines

    Remember that recent Pirate Bay verdict? The one in which the four founding members of the website were convicted with a year long jail sentence and a $3.6 million fine? Yeah, well it turns out that the sentence doesn't matter to them. According to Tom's Hardware, Peter Sunde, one of the founding members, have said that the website cannot and will not pay the fine.

    The founding members, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundström have told loyal supporters of the questionable website not to send donations to them to help pay the fine. Sunde came out stating, "We can't pay and we wouldn't pay. Even if I had the money I would rather burn everything I owned, and I wouldn't even give them the ashes." In mockery of the sentence, the spokesman showed, "I OWE U 31,000,000 SEK," on a sign during a webcast and said, "That's as close as you're going to get."

    Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100

    Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build.

    7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release.

    Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th.

    According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the latest build internally at the time of writing.

    Two men send 217,000 text messages, $26,000 bill

    Two men set out with the ambition to see how many text message they could send a month and rallied up 217,000 messages. The duo Nick Andes, 29, and Doug Klinger, 30, were relying on their unlimited text messaging plans to pay for the fiasco.

    In a mixup on T-mobile's end a bill was sent to Andes for the whopping sum of $26,000 which, as you can imagine, had him stunned at the expenses incurred. The bill alone cost T-Mobile $27.55 to ship to Andes but thankfully T-Mobile honored their unlimited text messaging plan and credit the amount back to the user.

    The two were hoping to set a guiness record for the most texts in a month but it has yet to be confirmed by Guiness World Records. It's quite amazing that they were able to send 217,000 message which averages out to about 7000 messages a day, 291 an hour or 4 every minute for the entire month. It's unclear from the story if these were actual messages transaction or if it was a program that was able to spam the messages.

    Windows 7 RC coming to MSDN/Technet soon, public May 5

    A page over at Microsoft Partners has been updated to show that Windows 7 RC will be publically released on May 5, and should be available for MSDN and Technet subscribers now. However, clicking through the download link will only get you the beta, right now.

    This would seem to jive with an earlier leak on a Microsoft page saying that the RC would be available in May, but that was taken down soon after it was reported.

    Well see how long this page stays updated with the Windows 7 RC information, or how long it'll take before RC does actually hit MSDN and Technet.

    Updated: The page at Microsoft has been reverted back to information on the Windows 7 beta, and information on obtaining trial keys for partners. There is information going around multiple sites and our forums that Windows 7 RC has been sent to major OEMs. While the only way we can confirm this is a quote from Microsoft Online Concierge Chat, that said "Currently the Windows 7 RC has not been avaiable through the TechNet subscription yet, only the Microsoft OEM partners such as Dell, Siemens are taking part in the RC's this period of test." We take this to mean those OEMs have the bits right now, and that they'll be hitting the public Internet in the dates listed on the leaked website.

    The Pirate Bay found guilty, jail & $3.6 million fine

    The Pirate Bay, notorious for providing BitTorrent files of all things copyrighted and illegal have lost a trial in Sweden today.

    The news first surfaced from founder Peter Sunde who used Twitter to break the news. Sunde said "according to leaked information from the court we lost (got the news last night). Trustworthy source as well." Sunde is also insisting "nothing will happen to TPB, us personally or file sharing what so ever. This is just a theater for the media."

    The four defendants named as Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde have been sentenced to 1 year in prison for "aiding in copyright infringement" coupled with a fine of 30 million Swedish kronor (£2.4 million/$3.6 million).

    A higher charge was dropped after shaky evidence at the beginning of the trial. The Motion Picture Association of America and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry are among those who have called for action to shut down the site. Critics of the trial claim Swedish authorities caved in to pressure from the US film industry.

    Members of The Pirate Bay have always stated that the site will remain safe regardless of legal action.

    Browse the Web Faster on a Slow Internet Connection

    If your current Internet speed is very slow and you are living in an area where broadband connections are still not available, here are some ideas to help you download web pages faster on your computer. You may use the same tips to improve your web browsing experience on a sluggish USB modem.
    Surf the Web Faster on Slow Internet

    1. Turn off web images, the Adobe Flash plug-in, Java Applets and JavaScript from your browser settings as these files are often the bulkiest elements of any web page.

    2. Increase the size of your browser cache. If the static parts of a site (like background graphics, CSS, etc) are stored in the local cache, your browser can safely skip downloading these files when you re-visit the site in future thus improving speed.

    3. Sometimes the slow DNS server of your ISP can be a bottleneck so switch to OpenDNS as it can resolve website URLs into IP addresses more quickly. If you aren’t too happy about OpenDNS redirecting your Google queries, follow this simple hack.

    4. Finch can serve a light-weight version of any website in real-time that is free of all bells and whistles. For instance, the New York Times homepage with all external resources can weigh more than a MB but Finch trims down the size by 90% so the site loads more quickly on a slow web connection.

    15 Essential Checks Before Launching Your Website

    Your website is designed, the CMS works, content has been added and the client is happy. It’s time to take the website live. Or is it? When launching a website, you can often forget a number of things in your eagerness to make it live, so it’s useful to have a checklist to look through as you make your final touches and before you announce your website to the world.

    This article reviews some important and necessary checks that web-sites should be checked against before the official launch — little details are often forgotten or ignored, but – if done in time – may sum up to an overall greater user experience and avoid unnecessary costs after the official site release.

    Favicon

    A favicon brands the tab or window in which your website is open in the user’s browser. It is also saved with the bookmark so that users can easily identify pages from your website. Some browsers pick up the favicon if you save it in your root directory as favicon.ico, but to be sure it’s picked up all the time, include the following in your head.

    1. <link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

    And if you have an iPhone favicon:

    Pop Up the Windows Calendar with a Single Hotkey

    you can use Win+B, then Left, then Enter to pop up this calendar with the keyboard (or you can just click once on the clock).

    But this can be done with a single keystroke with an AutoHotkey script.

    What we'll do is assign the F12 key to send the keystrokes instead of having to do them manually. Create a new file named something.ahk and then paste in the following:

    #InstallKeybdHook
    #Persistent
    #HotkeyInterval,100
    SetKeyDelay, -1

    f12::
    {
    send, {lwin down}b{lwin up}
    sleep 10
    send, {left}
    sleep 10
    send, {enter}
    Return
    }

    Save the file, and now you can double-click on it to launch it.

    At this point you can use the F12 key to pop open the calendar. If you want to close the script out, there's an icon in the system tray.

    Note: You can substitute another key instead of F12 if you want. You could also add #NoTrayIcon to keep it from putting an icon into the system tray.

    Copying the selected text in a textbox to clipboard

    Often in programming we ned to copy the selected text to the clipoard.

    Here is the method how to do this in visualbasic.net

    Copies the current selection in the text box to the Clipboard.

    [Visual Basic]
    Public Sub Copy()

    Remarks

    You can use this method, instead of using the Clipboard class, to copy text in the text box and place it in the Clipboard.

    Example

    [Visual Basic, C#, C++] The following example uses TextBox, a derived class. It provides Click event handlers for MenuItem objects that perform Cut, Copy, Paste, and Undo operations. This example assumes that a TextBox control named textBox1 has been created.

    [Visual Basic]
    Private Sub Menu_Copy(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs)
    ' Ensure that text is selected in the text box.
    If textBox1.SelectionLength > 0 Then
    ' Copy the selected text to the Clipboard.
    textBox1.Copy()
    End If
    End Sub

    Private Sub Menu_Cut(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs)
    ' Ensure that text is currently selected in the text box.
    If textBox1.SelectedText <> "" Then
    ' Cut the selected text in the control and paste it into the Clipboard.
    textBox1.Cut()
    End If

    Microsoft accidentally confirms Windows 7 RC coming in May

    Microsoft posted prematurely a download page for the Windows 7 Release Candidate and — gasp! — one with a date of May 2009 attached to it.

    The Windows team has been doing its best not to talk specific dates in advance of delivering any of its milestone builds. (No published dates means no one can ever say you’re late, right?)

    Previous reports had pegged Microsoft’s one and only RC as arriving in April.

    ArsTechnica has a screen shot of the Win 7 RC download page. As Ars notes, the RC download period is set to last through June 2009 and the RC set to expire in June 2010. Ars also grabbed a shot of the expected hardware requirements for the Windows 7 RC:

    • Internet access (to download Windows 7 RC and get updates)
    • A PC with these minimum recommended specifications:
      • 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor or higher
      • 1 GB of system memory or more
      • 16 GB of available disk space
      • Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
      • DVD-R/W Drive

    I’m still betting the Softies are going to RTM in Q3 of this year, whether the RC is slightly later than expected or not. We’ll see….

    How to copy Text from images

    Most of the time, we require the Text part from images but unable to do that. Then what we do, just start typing the whole Text part by referring to the image. But now you can ignore the typing, you have the power to copy the Text part from directly image by using JOCR. Using this small but powerful utility JOCR you can copy text from any images. Its based on Optical Character Recognition Technology.

    JOCR is a freeware application that enables you to capture the image on the screen and convert the captured image to text. It is useful to revive the protected files whose text can not be copied. JOCR enables you to copy text from any files and images on the screen such as protected Web pages, PDF files, error messages. The program offers several capture modes.

    JOCR requires Microsoft Office 2003 or higher version. If JCOR does not work, please manually install "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" (MODI) that is included in the setup file of Microsoft Office. You can find MODI under "Office Tools" of the setup file.
