Backstage Concept in Office 2010

[original.jpg]

Office 2010 also replaces the old File menu with a new interface called Backstage. This view, which is triggered by clicking the application button, takes up the entire application window and represents the "behind the scenes” operations that you can perform on the currently loaded document." It's also the place where you can access application options and other items that were previously found in the File menu, including Print, another essential, or core, Office capability. (In Backstage parlance, the document content is considered "on stage.")

Instead of launching a menu of choices, Backstage pops-up a window-like view where you can quickly perform tasks like saving and printing files and configuring preferences. Quick access to permissions, document meta-data under document info is also there.Hands on & you might find you like Backstage even more. For example, you can preview a document right from the “Print” settings so you don’t have to go to a separate “Print Preview” area anymore. Clicking ‘Print’ under the Office 2010 button opens a plethora of printing options. No need go through a ‘Print Wizard’ you can select all your print options from here & hit print.

New features to Office 2010

Office 2010 offers a few interesting if general new features.

1.The product will support "high definition" content, such as better-looking special effects, transitions, and images in applications like Excel and PowerPoint. It will also support advanced visualizations.
2. will support Microsoft's "work anywhere" notion via high-fidelity pass-through of documents between the PC desktop, the web, and mobile devices.
The Office Web Applications, which are of course, brand new, will open up Office tremendously, allowing customers to access their documents from anywhere, even if the PC they're using is not their own and does not have Office installed. Somewhat like Googgle Docs.
This is an interesting approach for taking a software suite and positioning it in the cloud computing generation. OS:Like Windows Azure
3.All Office applications will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions in Office 2010
4. It will allow users to connect and collaborate in real time, both on the PC desktop and on the web

System requirements for Office 2010

System requirements for office 2010 are :

1. Office 2010 will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. You need not to worry about the version of windows you are using. You would be asked to choose between 32 & 64 @ time of installation.

2. Office 2010 will run on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

3. You don't need to replace hardware that is capable of running 2007, it will support Office 2010. Like Windows 7 has demonstrated, MS realize that taking advantage of the hardware you already own is just as important as supporting all the new technology coming out.

Microsoft Office 2010 TP Activation Confusion

There have been some confusion regarding Activation of Office 2010 Technical Preview (TP), as it has been discussed in forums and Newsgroups. Here’s the clarification which should clear this doubt.

I hope you all got Invites for Microsoft Office 2010 from Microsoft Connect to be among the first people in the world to experience Office 2010, and have already obtained the Key and installed it. Let us start right from the installation. When you start the installation, it will ask for the Product Key.

So once installation is successful let us focus on Activation part, where the confusion is. If the checked box shown in above picture is checked and you are connected to net, the product will be activated automatically. To check this, Open Word or any other Office Product, Click on Office button on top left and click on ‘Word’, don’t click on ‘options’ just below it.

Actually it shows 2 messages (I have shown in 2 different colored outlines ) , One with Red Outline says ‘You have a license for this product’ ,This is for Microsoft Office Professional 2010, So your product is already activated. And below it there’s another (shown in blue outline) which says ‘You are running a trial version of’ with a button ‘Licensing Operations’. DON’T CLICK ON IT TO ACTIVATE. It also shows ‘This product will become unlicensed in …. days’ . Don’t confuse with this, this is for other product which is not related to ours. Our product is Microsoft Office Professional 2010 (Technical Preview) which is already activated as I said earlier.

Our Friend Vasudevg has resolved the confusion.Read more here

Microsoft Office users attacked by cybercriminals

Microsoft Corp warned that cybercriminals have attacked users of its Office software for Windows PCs, exploiting a programing flaw that the software giant has yet to repair.

The world's largest software maker issued the warning on Tuesday as it released patches to address nine other security holes in its software.

"Despite today's fixes, Windows users continue to be under attack. Microsoft is taking two steps forward, while attackers are putting it one step back," said Dave Marcus, McAfee Inc's Avert Labs director of security research.

Cybercriminals target Microsoft programs because they are so widely used, allowing them to go after the largest number of potential victims with one set of code. (Windows runs more than 90 percent of the world's PCs. Office has some 500 million users).

Hackers take advantage of the Office vulnerability by booby-trapping websites with malicious code that loads onto computers running Office software. Infected PCs are commandeered into a botnet, a network of hijacked computers. They are used for identity theft, spamming and other cybercrimes.

Microsoft did not say how many machines were attacked.

Users can prevent attacks by disabling functions within the Office software that allow it to work over the Web. Microsoft has posted a tool for doing that on its website -- here

Office XP, 2003 and 2007 are vulnerable to the attacks.

Microsoft Office 2010 Starts Ascension to the Cloud

Microsoft Word 2010MicrosoftA screen shot of the word processing application in Office 2010, which will allow more than one user to edit a document at the same time.

Microsoft’s saunter toward providing all of its Office software online continues this week with a preview of its Office 2010 software.

Unlike more Webby types that throw their code willy-nilly into the Internet cloud under a beta tag, Microsoft remains committed to its protracted, multistep software release process. On Monday, Microsoft will announce the “technical preview engineering milestone” for Office 2010, which means that tens of thousands of people — many of them software engineering partners — can download the software and give it a test drive.

At the end of the year, Microsoft expects to release a proper public beta for the software, and it intends to ship a final version off to PC makers in the first half of 2010.

Ultimately, anyone who signs up for a free Windows Live account will be able to use online versions of applications like Word and PowerPoint, regardless of whether or not they buy the desktop versions of the software. This is Microsoft’s response to Google, Adobe, Zoho and others that offer online productivity software free for personal use.

Corporate customers will be able to tap into the online services as well through a couple of paid subscription options. Smaller customers could sign up for a service in which Microsoft would store their online files and help with things like security and data backup. Large customers that already have Office licenses could have Microsoft host their information or store it in-house.

All told, Microsoft says about 400 million people already have a Windows Live account through services like Hotmail and Messenger, and 90 million more corporate customers have Office subscriptions. So, the company is boasting that half a billion people will have ready access to Office 2010 online next year.

Microsoft rejects criticism that it’s late to the online party, saying that competitors have just been playing a major game of catch-up.

“Lots of competitors are doing nothing beyond copying what we have done in our product for years,” said Chris Capossela, a senior vice president in Microsoft’s business division. “They have weekly releases to add things like bold and italics and more than four fonts. We have to redefine what productivity means to 500 million people.”

As you might expect, Office 2010 has tools for letting people collaboratively work on documents, presentations and other projects at the same time over the Internet.

Microsoft has also spiced up applications like PowerPoint by making it easier to add high-definition video into projects. Microsoft has software that compresses the files down, and it has a tool that will produce a Web address for the presentation that can be sent to coworkers or customers.

“Anyone can get that address and then have a slideshow come up,” Mr. Capossela said. “We call it just-in-time show-and-tell.”

Microsoft appears to have added some nice tweaks to Outlook as well.
